WHAT ARE PROBIOTICS? Probiotics are microrganisms which belong to a group fo commensal bacteria in animal's intestines. In fact, they live in symbiosis with our bodies and with those of our animals, feeding off what we give them. At the same time, higher animals (man, dogs, cats, etc.) gain advantages from having them in their bodies.
The name "probiotic" comes from ancient Greek and means "in favour of life". They have this name becouse they help animals to live in the sense that they provide extra "weapons" for living better and longer. WHERE DO THEY COME FROM AND WHERE ARE THEY? The natural environment for probiotics is in animals' intestines. Obviously each animal species has its own specific, useful "probiotics". So, for example, there is a specific species or a typical form in the intestine of a dog, another in cats or men and so on. As with all microrganisms, probiotics can be cultivated by man to obtain greater quantities to be administered to animals. |
