WHAT ARE PROBIOTICS? Probiotics are microrganisms which belong to a group fo commensal bacteria in animal's intestines. In fact, they live in symbiosis with our bodies and with those of our animals, feeding off what we give them. At the same time, higher animals (man, dogs, cats, etc.) gain advantages from having them in their bodies.
The name "probiotic" comes from ancient Greek and means "in favour of life". They have this name becouse they help animals to live in the sense that they provide extra "weapons" for living better and longer. WHERE DO THEY COME FROM AND WHERE ARE THEY? The natural environment for probiotics is in animals' intestines. Obviously each animal species has its own specific, useful "probiotics". So, for example, there is a specific species or a typical form in the intestine of a dog, another in cats or men and so on. As with all microrganisms, probiotics can be cultivated by man to obtain greater quantities to be administered to animals.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF PROBIOTICS? Probiotics have been and are still being studied by scientists becouse they perform many useful functions for the health and well-being of animals. In fact, probiotics have the following functions: they strengthen the immune defences in the intestine. These are among the most important in the body. They thus reduce episodes of food poisoning and diarrhoea. They produce substances which feed and reinforce the digestive apparatus, making it more efficient. They regularise the passage through the intestine, allowing more frequent and regular defecation. If taken from young age, they reduce the risk of developing allergies becouse they reularise the whole immune system which is at the root of allergies.
WHY TAKE IN PROBIOTICS WITH FOOD? The amount of probiotics normally present in the intestine of our animals is often insufficient for them to carry out their positive functions efficiently becouse of stress, nutrition or general discomfort which weaken them. Constantly taking in the right quantity of the right probiotic on a daily basis guarantees that there is always a large number of microrganism (probiotics) inside the intestine which are working together at maximum efficiency as a veritable army of defence for our animal friends in the face of infection, poisons, allergies, etc.. |
